Wordless Wednesday :: Broken Fishin’ Poles

Gabbi & I always ride in the same boat when we go Striper or B.A.S.S. fishing with the guides at Camp Cavett. Always. This time was no exception. Our guide this day was quite comical. He let us do just about whatever we wanted, which did include being pulled in by a huge fish and result and us getting to swim. That’s one of our traditions at camp. It was 12 years ago and it still is today. Although, we’ve grown out of being able to go with the guides, we do our own thing now. Gabbi & I do fish when we go out, it’s not all fun and games you know. On this particular day we both caught 36 fish a piece. This wasn’t including our guide and his catch, this was ours. While Gabbi & I were having our fun, Gabbi tosses her line out to try and land the “big one”. Instead of landing the “big one” on that throw, she broke her pole. Actually it just came apart and didn’t really break. We both immediately doubled over in laughter and so did our guide. I think he even made the comment about us destroying things, but you know I think I chose to forget that comment. We weren’t terrors, just played hard or attempted things that were both out of reach for us. Driving his boat for instance with the power pedals was an adventure for me. Hello, I’m short. I’m not pushing 6ft. and therefore some things just don’t work out like they should. His boat wasn’t harmed from my driving adventure, it was just a wild ride for all of us.

To prove some of the things we did really did happen, I tried to document most of everything I could. I don’t want to ever forget the amazing summers I spent with friends, the laughter that was shared, or the somewhat comical (looking back now) adventures that I was able to share with some of my best friends.

The broken pole. It really did happen. …only at Camp Cavett would Gabbi & I have such a story as this.

Eating with this wee one is a chore. She’s quite the beggar. She’ll sit and wait until you either give her something or she’ll wait for you to finish and then hop up on the chair and table to see if there are any leftovers. Have I mentioned that this little beggar is my dog? I don’t remember training her to do this, but I definitely don’t condone it. I’m trying to break her of this habit, so if any of ya’ll have an idea what I could do to break this wee one of this let me know.

At the end of a week long camp, you look around and realize there isn’t a single thing in your bags and you’re leaving from camp in 5 hours. What do you do? Take a quick nap, gather everything in a pile and shove things wherever they will fit. Yes, I’ve done this at camp. I always left with more than what I came with, always. One thing that never changed was the late night packing adventures us girls would have a camp. Long gone are those days, now we rent hotels just to hang out for the weekend at Camp Cavett and get away from our College Lives.

We all showed up to fish at Delilah’s farm several years ago and much to everyone’s surprise, there were guests there. You know, I’d love to think there were a hundred of these suckers running around 90 acres, but I’m sure that number isn’t correct. To a 10 year old these creatures were scary as hell. Luckily these things left not long after they showed up.

I completely loved my Physiology tutor in High School. Yes, I was “the Brain” in High School. I took more Science than what was required and excelled in those harder classes. Dear ole’ Twister loved tutoring me in Physiology or maybe it should be the other way around? I loved having him around to give me those much needed study breaks from Physio.

Flashback Friday :: Golfing with Pops

So when I say I’ve golfed since I was basically born, it’s true. Just take a look….and give Pops a break, it was the 80′s I’m sure those short shorts were in style back then.

13 years after this picture, I played this very same course….on my JR High Golf Team. I wound up skunking my coach the first time I really played this course. I think he was impressed as well as the guys that were on the team…did I mention I was the only girl on the team?

It all started with a Dance Recital routine gone bad. 2 weeks before my Tecumseh Dance Academy Recital, I did enough nerve/tendon/ligament damage to land me on crutches for awhile. Only I didn’t feel it was necessary to go to the doctor right then. I had too many other things to do, like finish the Dance Recital, go to BPA Nationals in Dallas, and hang out with friends before High School finished for the year. I was busy, too busy for the doctor.

Just before school let out for the summer (3 days before) I decided it would probably be wise to at least go have my ankle looked at since it was becoming harder & harder to walk and was swollen. I tried to remedy the situation on my own (I’m good at trying to do that), I used lots of icy hot, ace bandages & more ace bandages. Needless to say – nothing was helping. I wonder why?!

Upon further investigation at the doctor’s office it was discovered that I didn’t break my ankle (Thank Goodness!!), but there was something definitely going on since it was swollen. The doctor put a removable cast on it, seriously! I had an actual mold of my foot placed in the removable cast (sort of like a splint) & then a bright yellow ace bandage around it. It was horrific. Nothing to subtle about what I had done. Luckily I didn’t get too much grief from the doctor who did lecture me about the fact that my body parts should be more important than being an Overachiever. What did he know anyway?! I had my first MRI and learned that I had in fact done an incredible amount of ligament/tendon/nerve damage. I even had to go through a lot of PT to rehab that dear ankle – although there were a few times I would’ve been happy to part with it.

I wound up not swimming that summer. Barely driving (since it was my right ankle). Using crutches constantly. And having the worst raw armpit skin ever. But, I did have some killer forearms….

….I hated using my crutches. I reverted to being a 9month old and crawling everywhere.

Then there were the times I didn’t take it easy.

The number of candles that should have graced Dad’s Birthday cake this year. Instead, we opted for two so we wouldn’t catch the house on fire.
